5 tips for dental care between checkups

Every six months we see the results of what happened in the 180 days between visits. The good news: the difference between “quick clean, see you in six months” and “we need to talk about these three spots” usually comes down to a handful of small habits. Here they are, ranked by impact.

1. Clean between your teeth — this is the big one

Your brush cannot reach roughly a third of each tooth’s surface. That third is exactly where most of the cavities we fill got started. Floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser — the best tool is the one you’ll actually use daily. If floss keeps snapping between tight teeth, tell us at your next visit; sometimes that’s a sign of an aging filling, not user error.

2. Brush before breakfast, not after

Counterintuitive but true: acidic breakfasts (juice, fruit, coffee) soften enamel temporarily. Brushing right after works that acid into the surface. Brush when you wake up, or wait 30–45 minutes after eating.

3. Don’t rinse after brushing

Spit out the excess toothpaste — but skip the water rinse. Leaving a thin film of fluoride toothpaste on your teeth overnight is one of the cheapest cavity-prevention measures that exists.

4. Snacking frequency beats sugar quantity

Ten small sugary sips spread across an afternoon do more damage than one dessert eaten in five minutes. Every sugar contact restarts a ~30-minute acid attack. If you love sweet things, have them with meals and keep grazing to a minimum.

5. Water is doing more work than you think

Finishing meals with a few sips of water rinses away food debris and buffers acid while your saliva catches up. It’s especially useful after coffee and wine if staining bothers you.

What about mouthwash, whitening toothpaste, oil pulling…?

Mostly optional. A fluoride mouthwash helps if you’re cavity-prone; “whitening” toothpastes mainly remove surface stains and can be abrasive daily. Nothing on a shop shelf replaces tips 1–3.
